The Smoke That Remembers

Thirty years ago, Hollow Pine Forest burned in one night and took forty lives — including the mother that fire lookout June Osei was raised to believe caused it all. Now, on the fire's thirtieth anniversary, smoke is rising from ground where nothing burns, and the missing are walking out of it wearing the faces of everyone still loved. June has seven days before the anniversary blaze to learn what her mother really did that night, before the forest finishes what it started.
